The costs for running the Club have risen, in particular the insurance cover provided by Mountaineering Scotland. It is therefore necessary to increase the Club’s annual subscriptions.

Membership Categories

Club membership is divided into several categories:

  1. Standard membership – where ASC pays the insurance contribution to Mountaineering Scotland directly.
  2. Discount membership – where either the insurance contribution is paid by another club (typically Eagle Ski Club); or through individual membership of Mountaineering Scotland; or the member is resident overseas and not eligible for cover by Mountaineering Scotland.
  3. Members under 30 years of age – subsidised membership rate *
  4. Honorary members – no subscription due.

  5. Starting in October 2026, the committee has introduced an extra category:

  6. Retired members – a social category, only for existing members who no longer take part in any mountaineering activities related to the Club. Retired members can attend the Annual Dinner, lectures, receive the printed Annual Review, and retain access to the website for sharing with other members. On request.
Young Members *

The previous scheme of exempting Young members under 30, for the first 2 years was totally unworkable and has been abandoned.

This has been replaced with a 50% discount for Standard members OR a full exemption where insurance is not payable, while < 30 years of age.

Subscriptions starting 1 October 2026

Standard £50 Insurance paid by ASC
Discount £22 Insurance not applicable
Young Standard £25 50% of Standard (to cover cost of insurance)
Young Discount £0 Insurance not applicable
Honorary £0 Unchanged – exempt
Retired £18 Unchanged from current discounted subscription

Subscription Payment Methods

The standard means of paying subscriptions is by Direct Debit on a UK/EU bank, using GoCardless.

Many with discount membership are still paying their subscription by Standing Order. This is being discontinued and will be replaced by Direct Debit using GoCardless.

Exceptions:

If overseas members are not able to make payment on a UK bank, the Treasurer may allow an alternative method.

Retired members, whose existing subscription will not change, may continue paying by Standing Order. Although any change in circumstance will trigger a switch to Direct Debit, using GoCardless.

Next Step

The Treasurer will send an individual email to all members, with specific details for updating their payment method.
