trans ski mountaineering pyrenees traverse 2020

Online Alternative to Lecture - Spring 2020

Trans Pyrenees Ski Touring Epic

by David Hamilton

David’s illustrated talk of his Trans Pyrenean Epic has been postponed until the autumn.
In its place, we shall be holding an online Zoom meeting where David will give a tantalising preview of the adventure. He will be talking about the challenges of organising such a expedition and comparing today’s efforts with those of John Harding’s explorations in the 1980s and 90s. There will be a Q&A session.
In an era of unprecedented climate change is there enough snow cover in the Pyrenees for a full winter ski mountaineering traverse?

David together with Steve Kentish set out from Banyuls on the Mediterranean coast in mid January. Their aim was to be the first UK skiers to complete a full coast to coast traverse in a single winter.
By March 17th they had completed 90% of the route (44 stages in 63 days) reaching the western edge of the snowline at Iraty in the Basque country. The Covid 19 shutdown in Europe prevented them completing the last few days walk down to the Atlantic coast.
ASC Club members are invited to join the Zoom meeting on 13th May and share in the experiences of these intrepid ski tourers.
