The ASC autumn meet is being held in the Robertson Lamb hut, in Great Langdale. Self catering with a well equipped kitchen (communal meals may be considered when numbers are known).

The Annual Dinner is the one of the Club’s main events of the year when all members get the chance to meet up, renew acquaintances, discuss future plans and introduce others with an interest in our activities, particularly younger ski mountaineers. Members are warmly encouraged to attend and to bring guests, particularly those with an interest in ski mountaineering.

This year’s speaker is Stephen Venables, mountaineer, writer, broadcaster and public speaker. He was the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen. He reached the summit alone, after climbing with a small American-Canadian team, by a new route up the gigantic Kangshung Face.

Everest was a thrilling highlight in a career which has taken Stephen right through the Himalaya, from Afghanistan to Tibet, making first ascents of many previously unknown mountains. His adventures have also taken him to the Rockies, the Andes, the Antarctic island South Georgia, East Africa, South Africa and of course the European Alps, where he has climbed and skied for over forty years. Recent adventures to Antarctica and South Georgia have relied on skis for access to remote and unclimbed mountains so we’re delighted that Stephen has agreed to be our principal guest at the Annual Dinner. He is an award winning author and accomplished speaker. Whether with tales of his latest exploits or new perspective on mountains and mountaineering, he will be an enthralling guest.

“Welcome to the Pen-Y Gwryd Hotel, a long established and traditional mountaineer’s hotel in Snowdonia.
Our historic hotel at the foot of Snowdon is where Hilary and Tenzing trained for the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. When Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay first stood on the top of Mount Everest, only a handful of people knew the debt of gratitude they owed not only to the mountains of North wales but also to a little hotel in the lee of Snowdon. It was at the PyG that members of the 1953 Everest expedition stayed during their training for that historic adventure and it subsequently became – and remains a place of pilgrimage for mountaineers the world over.”

Dinner Places: The Club will make the booking for dinner on Saturday 4th November. A restricted number of dining places are available for those not staying at the Pen-y-Gwryd hotel.
Pen-y-Gwyrd hotel rooms: The Club has reserved a range of rooms at the hotel for the Friday and Saturday nights, which will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Several twin rooms are available for singles to share. Please book via the club website.

President’s Meet

Alpine Ski Club meet

After several excellent meets in Ochengarten it’s time for a change. In discussions, a consensus was for a slightly later date than previous meets, with the same format of easy access half board, suitable mountains, ski bus available for uplift etc. A suitable venue has been found in Reschen at the Hotel Am Reschensee

in the South Tyrol on the Italian-Austrian border.

A tentative booking has been made for 16 people for the period in early March 2018, avoiding half-term. The cost quoted is 70 Euros each per day half-board. Two to a room has been requested, although some single rooms may be available, this may incur an extra cost.

Early booking is strongly recommended. To reserve your place, apply to Allan Hargreaves and send him a cheque for £100 as a deposit, returnable on the meet. Please also indicate dietary or other requirements.
