Skiing in Antarctica - David HamiltonThere is more snow and ice in Antarctica than in the other six continents combined. However the costs of getting there means that only a lucky few have been able to enjoy the unique experience of skiing in Antarctica. ASC President David Hamilton has spent 4 summer seasons working as a guide leading adventurous tourist groups in Antarctica. He has led 3 groups to the South Pole and climbed Mt Vinson 4,892m (Antarctica's highest peak) 8 times. This talk will focus on the 2007/8 season looking at the use of nordic skis to cover large distances on the level polar plateau, and alpine skis to make ascents and descents in the Elsworth mountains. Summit of Mt Vinson 4,892m 8th October 2008 Buffet 7.00pm Lecture 8.00pm Alpine Club , 55 Charlotte Road, London EC2A 3QA Please contact The Secretary if you would like to attend. |
