Avalanche rescue transceivers are available for hire from the Alpine Ski Club (normally this is available only to residents of the UK) subject to our Conditions of Hire.
The digital Tracker transceiver is simpler to use than the earlier analogue transceivers. Search times are therefore faster, so improving the chances of a casulty surviving being caught in an avalanche. The hire scheme is run on a voluntary basis without permanent staff so it is advisable to book at least one month in advance to be sure that your booking can be dealt with in time (we go ski-touring too!). If in doubt, e-mail the hire manager. Batteries are provided with at least 80% charge remaining. This is sufficient for at least two weeks ski-touring in normal use. The transceivers will search for at least one hour after transmitting for 200 hours. Batteries should be replaced before the power display reaches zero percent, at which time there is still some reserve power supply. Sets are tested every time they are returned from hire. The transceivers are fully compatible with all 457kHz analogue transceivers but not the obsolete 2.2kHz analogue transceivers. All orders are acknowledged by email. Hires are charged by the week with an initial minimum hire period that allows sufficient time to receive the transceivers, travel to and from the mountains, at least 1 full week in use, and time to return them on your return. Transceivers are sent out by Special Delivery Mail at least 2 days before the hire period begins to ensure that transceivers are delivered in time. Hire rates are as follows:- | Cost of hire | Members | Non- Members | | Initial period (12 days) | £10 | £24 | | Additional week | £5 | £12 | | Postage £5.50 for the first transceiver and £2.00 for each additional |
To hire the Tracker transceivers, please complete the hire form and send it with your cheque (and with a SAE for an acknowlegement if no email address available) to the hire manager.
